About the museum
The Nidzica Land Museum operates in the Teutonic castle in Nidzica, which is looked after by the Nidzica Cultural Centre. The castle was built at the beginning of the 15th century as the seat of the Teutonic procurator. In 1410 Polish troops captured it. In the following centuries the building changed owners many times, and its outer bailey (przedzamcze) was extended and later burned down. In the 19th century a court and a prison were housed here. During the Second World War the castle was bombed, and its reconstruction was completed in 1965.
The tour begins on the ground floor, where the historical exhibition “Z dziejów Ziemi Nidzickiej” (From the History of the Nidzica Land) is presented in four rooms. The first room shows the earliest history of the Prussians and the beginnings of the castle and the town; the second shows photographs of Nidzica (Neidenburg) from before the two world wars, Masurian tiles and Gothic religious prints for Masurians. In the third room, the armoury, there are replicas of the weapons of peasant infantry and knights from the time of the Battle of Grunwald, and the fourth room is devoted to ethnography, with the furnishings of Masurian cottages.
On the upper floor is the Knights’ Hall with 15th-century polychromy and a Gothic vault, the former office of the village mayor, a chapel and a refectory. The route ends in a viewing hall in the former Teutonic granary, with a panorama of the town, which also serves as the Gallery under the Beam (Galeria pod Belką). In the outer bailey is the Gallery Baszta, with prints and paintings by Hieronim Skurpski, one of the most outstanding artists of Warmia and Masuria.
