About the museum
The Muzeum Ziemi Lubawskiej is housed in a former vicarage (wikariatka), one of the oldest buildings in Lubawa, built beside the Gothic tower of the town's medieval fortifications. The building once housed a school, as well as the first local museum, whose collections were mainly sacred. The property belongs to the parish of the Nawiedzenia NMP i św. Anny (Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Anne).
The official opening of the new institution took place on 2 July 2024, and the day before, the museum was blessed by Bishop Wiesław Śmiegiel. The project was financed by the Ministry of Culture as part of an initiative of the Fundacja im. Rodziny Działyńskich (Działyński Family Foundation), and the conservation work was carried out by the company Gorek Restauro.
The collection is dominated by sacred art from the 16th to the 20th century. The most valuable exhibits include a gilded Mass chalice from the early 16th century, a crucifix from the 16th/17th century, feletons from 1760–1780, a Pietà from the early 16th century, the painting “Chrystus w Ogrójcu” (Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane) from the second half of the 17th century, and votive offerings.
