About the museum
The Muzeum Chleba, Szkoły i Ciekawostek (Museum of Bread, School and Curiosities) in Radzionków was founded on the initiative of Piotr Mankiewicz, who for many years collected objects related to bread-making and to respect for bread. The museum has been operating for more than twenty years and regards children as its most important guests.
The collections are shown differently from in a classic museum: the exhibits have no labels, and their meaning is explained by a guide who asks questions such as “co to?” (what is it?) and “do czego służyło?” (what was it used for?), while visitors guess. The exhibition “Od ziarenka do bochenka” (From Grain to Loaf) shows how bread is made today and how it was made in the past, and the room “W dawnej szkole” (In the Old School) takes visitors back to a classroom of years gone by.
The museum also displays Rozbark costumes (bytomskie), which were once worn in Upper Silesia as a sign of Polishness, as well as unusual everyday objects. A visit lasts about two hours and usually combines with a workshop on shaping and baking plaited breads.
