About the museum
The Muzeum Instytutu Tarnogórskiego (Tarnowskie Góry Institute Museum) has operated since 1997 in a 19th-century townhouse in the centre of Tarnowskie Góry. It was established on the initiative of Dr Marek Wroński, who bought the building in order to display his collection on Polish military history. It is run by the Stowarzyszenie Instytut Tarnogórski i Muzeum (Tarnowskie Góry Institute and Museum Association), which is also a private scientific and research institution.
The collections number more than 40,000 exhibits: uniforms, including general’s uniforms, weapons, military equipment, medals and decorations, documents and photographs. The institution also holds archaeological, ethnographic collections and collections on the history of the town and region, and the museum has a scientific library and an archive.
The institute publishes academic works, including “Studia nad Dawnym Wojskiem, Bronią i Barwą” (Studies on Old Military Affairs, Weapons and Colours), “Zeszyty Tarnogórskie” (Tarnowskie Góry Notebooks) and “Tarnogórski Rocznik Muzealny” (Tarnowskie Góry Museum Yearbook). In 2014 the museum adopted visiting regulations agreed with the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
