About the museum

The Museum in Tarnowskie Góry began operating in 1958 and is the only local-government museum in the Tarnowskie Góry district. It is run by the Tarnowskie Góry commune, and its collections number nearly 10 thousand exhibits in the departments of history, art and ethnography.

The seat occupies the first floor and the attic of the Sedlaczek Tenement House on the Market Square, one of the oldest tenement houses in the town. The building probably dates from the 16th century, and the first mention of it comes from 1670. In 1805 it was bought by Johann Sedlaczek, who moved a wine bar operating since 1786 into it; the wine bar still operates on the ground floor today. The exhibition interiors stand out for their painted wooden ceilings, a stone portal and a stucco vault.

The permanent exhibitions present the history of Tarnowskie Góry, a Renaissance hall with a gallery of Western European painting, and an exhibition devoted to Jan III Sobieski. The museum also runs the Dworzec Kultury (Station of Culture) in the railway station building, where a contemporary art gallery and the Tarnogórska Makieta Kolejowa (Tarnowskie Góry Model Railway) are housed, and it conducts tours of the Church of the Saviour (Kościół Zbawiciela).
