About the museum
The Muzeum Diecezjalne w Łomży opened on 16 April 2012 in the presence of the Apostolic Nuncio to Poland. The institution is a unit of the Łomża Diocese; its founder and first organiser was Fr Tomasz Grabowski. It is housed in the extended building of the diocesan retirement home for priests at ul. Giełczyńska.
About 450 m² are given over to the permanent exhibition. The main hall, “Między ziemią a niebem” (Between Earth and Heaven), presents a gallery of sculpture and sacred painting from the diocese, including the oldest works, from the early 16th century. The room “Na plebanii” (In the Parsonage) recreates the interior of an old parsonage, while the “Skarbiec” (Treasury) holds silver and gold liturgical objects: monstrances, chalices, pax tablets, reliquaries and bells, including Gothic chalices.
A room for temporary exhibitions was opened in 2013. The museum runs museum lessons. Its collections also include early printed books, historical documents and portraits of the bishops of Sejny.
