About the museum
The museum was established on 14 December 2013 on the initiative of Marzena and Zbigniew Banaszek, who financed it from their own funds. It was initially called the Muzeum Garnizonu i Ziemi Ostrowskiej (Museum of the Garrison and the Ostrów Land) and later adopted its present name, which emphasises memorabilia from the Eastern Borderlands. The institution is entered on the list of museums kept by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
The seat is a restored wartime granary built by the Germans in 1941 to supply the Eastern Front. The exhibition occupies four very large rooms; two of them, on the upper floor, are used for panel exhibitions, meetings and lectures. The first room on the ground floor shows memorabilia from the Eastern Borderlands, and the second militaria and numerous souvenirs relating to the Officer Cadet School of Infantry (Szkoła Podchorążych Piechoty), which operated in nearby Komorów.
The collections include extensive documentation and memorabilia relating to the history of military units stationed in Ostrów Mazowiecka and the surrounding area, from the 19th century to the present. The museum also presents a historical exhibition on the Ostrów Land from the Middle Ages to the Second World War, and publishes its own books, including on the youth of Witold Pilecki and on the Officer Cadet School of Infantry.
