About the museum
The museum in Łomża was founded in 1946 on the initiative of Adam Chętnik within the Instytut Północno-Mazowiecki (North Masovian Institute). It was officially opened on 14 March 1948. The first collections came from a former research station and from post-war finds. The institution was nationalised in 1950; in 1975 it became a district museum, and in 1998, on its fiftieth jubilee, it returned to the name Muzeum Północno-Mazowieckie.
Over the decades the museum changed its premises: from small rooms at Aleja Legionów, through the third floor of the Powiatowy Dom Kultury at ul. Sadowa, to the renovated Domek Pastora. Since September 2005 it has been located in the former building of a lower secondary school (gimnazjum) at ul. Dworna 22c, adapted to exhibition needs.
The collections cover the archaeology of the Łomża region from the end of the Palaeolithic to the modern period, numismatics, a collection of amber, ethnography (including Kurpie paper cut-outs, wycinanki, and wood sculptures, costumes and crafts), history, and artistic crafts with more than 130 oil lamps. The museum also has a scientific library, and a branch is the Galeria Sztuki Współczesnej (Gallery of Contemporary Art) at ul. Długa 13.
