About the museum
In 1930 the town authorities decided to establish a regional museum (Heimatmuseum), and the first exhibition opened in 1931 in two rooms of the town hall. In 1934–1937 the collections grew considerably thanks to a donation from the widow of the Silesian painter Josef Langer, and the museum then received its own building, a former school. In 1946 the institution survived the war without losses, and its German curator handed it over to the Polish authorities.
In the 1950s the first Polish director was Wacław Brejter, and the collections of the closed museum in Niemcza were added. Because the authorities did not favour “post-German” collections, the profile was changed to household appliances and the name to Muzeum Sprzętu Gospodarstwa Domowego (Museum of Household Appliances). In the first half of the 1970s the museum returned to the town hall.
Since 1 January 2023 the institution has borne the name Muzeum Domu Śląskiego (Museum of the Silesian Home). In the ten rooms of the exhibition “Dziesięć sal, jeden dom” (“Ten Rooms, One House”), visitors will see, among other things, the largest collection of irons in Europe, the Josef Langer collection, a kitchen from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a Biedermeier parlour, a Baroque study, an ethnographic room, sacred and guild sculpture, weapons, and an exhibition on almost eight hundred years of the history of Ziębice.
