About the museum

The Geological Museum was established in 1964 as part of the Świętokrzyski Branch of the Państwowy Instytut Geologiczny (Polish Geological Institute). Its organiser and long-time curator was Prof. Halina Żakowa. Until 1992 the collections served as an archive, and from that year they were opened to visitors. The museum is housed in the branch’s seat at ul. Zgoda 21 in Kielce.

The main exhibition presents 600 million years of the geological history of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, from the Cambrian to the Quaternary. In the foyer visitors are greeted by a geological map of the region and the skeleton of a whale, Pinocetus polonicus, from about 15 million years ago, emerging from a block of Pińczów limestone. The display cases show rocks and fossils in stratigraphic order, including trilobites, graptolites, Devonian corals, dinosaur tracks and banded flint. The second part of the exhibition presents the region’s minerals: copper, lead and iron ores, sulphur, and building and decorative stones, including the marbles of the Świętokrzyskie region.

In front of the building is an outdoor exhibition (lapidarium) with a granite erratic boulder from the area of Sadkowa, the trunk of a black oak from the area of Tarnobrzeg, and slabs of red sandstone from Tumlin with the tracks of reptiles from about 250 million years ago. The museum receives school and kindergarten groups and runs thematic temporary exhibitions.
