About the museum
The Muzeum Ziemi Zaborskiej (Zabór Land Museum) was established in 1987 as part of the Gminny Ośrodek Kultury in Wiele, now the Dom Kultury im. Hieronima Derdowskiego (Hieronim Derdowski Culture House). Its core is the collection of Leonard Brzeziński, a biology and geography teacher who, after retiring in 1954, began gathering relics of folk culture and art. The collection numbers 365 exhibits, most of them from southern Kashubia.
Brzeziński also embroidered himself and created his own school of Kashubian embroidery, known as haft wielewski (Wiele embroidery), prized for its precision and distinctive colours. The museum holds several hundred of his works. He also made objects from cattle horn, including snuff boxes. The collections further include old farm and fishing tools, everyday objects, such as an iron cast from a solid block of iron from the early 19th century, and musical instruments.
The second part of the exhibition, the Galeria Współczesnej Sztuki Ludowej Kaszub (Gallery of Contemporary Kashubian Folk Art), presents sculptures, wicker products, Kashubian embroidery, paintings on glass and folk instruments.
