About the museum
The Muzeum Historii Polskiego Ruchu Ludowego was established by a decision of the Minister of Culture and Arts of 8 March 1984. Its seat is the so-called Yellow Inn (Żółta Karczma) on al. Wilanowska, on the Mokotów escarpment. The building, in the style of Italian neo-Renaissance suburban villas, was erected in the mid-19th century to a design by the Italian architect Franciszek Maria Lanci. The residents of Wilanów designated it as an inn for travellers.
After the war the building was left without proper care for a long time and fell into disrepair. Only in the first half of the 1980s did the Ministry of Culture and Arts carry out a major renovation and assign the building to the museum. The institution has a scholarly and research character: it collects, safeguards and makes accessible materials illustrating the development and achievements of the Polish Peasant Movement, its parties, youth and cooperative organisations, and rural organisations.
The museum has gathered more than 46,000 exhibits, which it also keeps in its branches in Sandomierz and in Piaseczno near Gniew. Its collections include memorabilia of activists such as Wincenty Witos, more than 250 banners of peasant parties and organisations, paintings and sculptures on rural themes, and documents, posters and photographs. The museum also conducts educational and publishing activities and organises open-air events in its garden.
