About the museum
The Królikarnia palace was built at the end of the 18th century for Count Karol Thomatis de Valery, to a design by Dominik Merlini. The estate also included a brewery, a brickworks, an inn, a mill and a kitchen, which was later converted into a library. In 1849 the estate was bought by the art collector Ksawery Pusłowski, which made the place a hospitable home for artists.
In 1879 the building burnt down and was rebuilt a few years later. It was destroyed again during the Second World War and the Warsaw Uprising. Shortly after the war it was decided to rebuild the palace as a studio and museum of the sculptor Xawery Dunikowski. The artist died in 1964 without ever living in Królikarnia, and the museum opened on 26 January 1965.
The museum is a branch of the National Museum in Warsaw. Its collections number about 7,000 sculptures, from the late 15th century to the present day, and it is the largest sculpture collection in Poland. It consists of collections of early modern, modern and contemporary sculpture and a separate collection of Xawery Dunikowski, with sculptures, paintings, drawings, a photographic archive and the artist's memorabilia. Works from the collections are also shown in the Sculpture Park around the palace, in the Studio Storehouses (Magazyny Studyjne) and at temporary exhibitions.
