About the museum
The Museum of Blacksmithing in Warsaw (Muzeum Kowalstwa w Warszawie) was established in the 1990s on the initiative of the married couple Eleonora and Zdzisław Gałecki. It is a private museum with a statute approved by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, and a member of the Association of Open-Air Museums in Poland (Stowarzyszenie Muzeów na Wolnym Powietrzu w Polsce).
The museum includes a wooden forge of 30 square metres, built in log construction and equipped like the suburban forges of Mazovia at the beginning of the 20th century. It continues the tradition of the former Służew forge, one of the oldest in Mazovia. The fittings are objects from the period, including a double-chamber bellows, a hand drill, a grindstone, a beakless anvil (kowadło bezroże), a hardie (dziurawnica) and a massive workbench with a vice.
In the area in front of the forge are gathered agricultural and horticultural machines and devices, such as a horse gin (kierat), a chaff-cutter, ploughs and harrows, as well as a pillar dovecote, a log beehive, a well winch and a chapel of St Joseph. Alongside the permanent display, sculpture and painting relating to the character of the museum are shown temporarily. The museum also has an artistic blacksmithing workshop, where iron objects and interior arrangements are made.
