About the museum
The palace at ul. Piłsudskiego was built in 1884 to a design by Antoni Siedek for Count Emeryk Hutten-Czapski (1828–1896), an outstanding Polish numismatist and collector. A museum pavilion designed by Tadeusz Stryjeński was later added to it. After the count’s death his collections went in 1903 to the National Museum in Kraków.
In 1939 the museum was closed to visitors, and for more than seventy years the palace served the administration of the National Museum. A conservation renovation carried out in 2013 as part of an EU project prepared the building for presenting the numismatic collections.
The numismatic collection numbers more than a hundred thousand objects, of which about 2,500 of the most valuable are shown in the permanent exhibition on the history of Polish money and medal-making. Rotating displays also show rare old prints, maps and manuscripts. A public garden lies beside the palace, and a café is in the pavilion named after Józef Czapski.
