About the museum
The National Museum in Kraków (Muzeum Narodowe w Krakowie) looks after the largest collection of works by Stanisław Wyspiański (1869–1907), more than 1100 works, together with numerous memorabilia, documents and books donated by the family after the artist's death.
The branch is located at plac Sikorskiego 6, in a historic building that previously housed the European Culture Centre “Europeum”. Since December 2021 there has been a gallery devoted to Wyspiański here, which combines features of a biographical museum with an overview of his work.
The permanent exhibition shows the various areas of the artist's interests: intimate portraits of the family and the pastel “Views from the Studio Window”, designs of furniture and interiors, monumental sketches for stained glass, and plans for the reconstruction of the Wawel Hill, which Wyspiański regarded as the spiritual centre of the homeland. As many works were made in pastel on paper, the exhibition is changed regularly to protect the works.
