About the museum
The house at ul. Krupnicza 26 was built after a fire destroyed a wooden manor house in 1850, and it received its present form in 1873–1874. Stanisław Wyspiański was born here in 1869, and later the house was lived in by other owners, including the historian Józef Szujski. In 1932 the painter Józef Mehoffer bought the house, carried out a general renovation, gave the interiors a new layout and set up a family seat called the Pałacyk pod Szyszkami (Little Palace under the Cones).
After the Second World War the artist’s family remained in the house. In 1986, in accordance with the family’s wishes, the property passed into state ownership and was handed over to the National Museum in Kraków for a branch devoted to Mehoffer. It opened to visitors in 1996.
Inside, among historic furniture, applied art, photographs and family mementos, works by Mehoffer are shown. He was a pupil of Jan Matejko, a friend of Stanisław Wyspiański and one of the most outstanding artists of Young Poland (Młoda Polska). Adjoining the house is a garden reconstructed in 2003 on the basis of the painter’s pictures. It was opened to the public in 2004, is free of charge, and in summer a seasonal café operates there.
