About the museum

The Bochnia Museum was founded in 1959. Its patron, Stanisław Fischer, a teacher, social activist and regionalist, recognised as Righteous Among the Nations, donated his own collection to the institution: folk sculpture and painting, old prints and manuscripts, guild memorabilia, militaria and archaeological finds.

The museum is housed in the former Dominican monastery building at Rynek 20. After a fire in 1751 the monastery lost its sacred function and served only secular purposes, including as the seat of offices. Since 1983 the museum has hosted the Thursday Museum Meetings (Czwartkowe Spotkania Muzealne), lectures in various fields of the humanities.

The collections number over 20 thousand objects in five departments: art, history, archaeology, ethnography and natural history. The archive contains parchment documents, early prints from the 15th–18th centuries, old photographs, postcards and maps, including mining plans and maps from the 18th–20th centuries. The permanent exhibition covers folk art and customs of the region, the archaeology and history of Bochnia with particular emphasis on the salt mine, guild memorabilia, national uprisings, Judaica and a gallery of Polish painting of the 19th and 20th centuries.
