About the museum
The Muzeum Ziemi Wiśnickiej is housed in the former poorhouse (Zakład Ubogich), once called the hospital, founded in 1641 by Stanisław Lubomirski as a shelter for the poor and the elderly of the Wiśnicz estate. In 1869 the hospital’s funds were handed over to the management of the municipalities, and the building became the property of the town. After the badly damaged building was renovated in 2002, the museum opened there.
The institution collects and processes historical memorabilia relating to the region: records, manuscripts, copies, posters and photographs of Wiśnicz. The museum also collects works of older and contemporary art connected with the Wiśnicz Land and with artists from there, among them Stanisław Klimowski, Marian Rojek, Jan Stasiniewicz, Father Stanisław Nowak and Czesław Dźwigaj. Next to the building stands a monument to Juliusz Kossak, who was born in Nowy Wiśnicz.
The institution of the same name also runs the castle in Nowy Wiśnicz, a four-winged residence with a courtyard and four towers. It was founded by the Kmita family in the mid-14th century and rebuilt in 1615–1621 by Stanisław Lubomirski, who surrounded it with bastion fortifications. The castle is visited with a guide. Its holdings include a chapel with the Lubomirski crypt, underground stables with an exhibition of torture instruments, and an exhibition of works by Czesław Dźwigaj.
