About the museum
The Muzeum Motyli Arthropoda (Arthropoda Butterfly Museum) in Bochnia is a private institution that grew out of the collecting passion of Jacek Kobiela, a fine artist and art conservator. It began with the purchase of several old collections of mounted butterflies. Over time the collection was enlarged with specimens from the founder’s own expeditions and with specimens bought from collectors and entomologists; the oldest specimens are about 130 years old.
Since 2009 the collection has been looked after by the founder’s son, Filip Kobiela, who is also responsible for the artistic design of the museum. The exhibition is located at ul. Czackiego 9, next to the Bochnia Salinarne Plants (Plant Salinarnych), and occupies two floors.
The permanent exhibition presents a systematic overview of day and night butterflies, divided into families and genera occurring on individual continents. An important part of the collection is a complete set of Polish day butterflies, as well as species from the Bochnia area. Besides butterflies, other arthropods are shown: beetles, stick insects, praying mantises, cicadas, true bugs, scorpions and spiders.
