About the museum
The museum grew out of the collection of the Riesengebirgsverein (Karkonosze Society), founded in 1880. The collections were opened to the public on 2 June 1889 in the former grammar school at today’s ul. 1 Maja, and in 1902 they were moved to ul. Szkolna. The present building was designed by the Wrocław architect Carl Grosser; construction began in 1912, and it opened on 14 April 1914.
After the Second World War the building was taken over by the Muzeum Miejskie (Municipal Museum), which functioned as a storehouse for monuments, and in 1949 it was renamed the Regional Museum. In 1953 a permanent exhibition on the history of the town and the region opened. From 1964 art glass became the leading field of the collection. After 1975, as a District Museum, the institution set up branches, among them the castle in Bolków (1977) and the Dom Gerharta i Carla Hauptmannów (House of Gerhart and Carl Hauptmann) in Szklarska Poręba (1995). It has borne its present name, Muzeum Karkonoskie w Jeleniej Górze, since 2001.
In 2009–2011 the main building was renovated and extended with EU funding. The glass collection numbers more than 9,000 objects, and the whole collection amounts to more than 60 thousand items, including graphics, historical monuments, archaeology, ethnography and regional art.
