About the museum
The Muzeum Sentymentów (Museum of Sentiments) has been operating since June 2018 on the site of the former Carpet Factory (Fabryka Dywanów) in Kowary. The exhibition was initiated by Andrzej Olszewski, who has for many years collected objects from the PRL period. The name deliberately does not contain the abbreviation PRL: the museum is meant to be a store of pleasant memories of past years, in which visitors travel back in time.
The exhibition covers about 1,000 m² and includes 17 themed rooms and 5 corridor exhibitions. Among others, the following have been recreated: a room with the grandparents' kitchen, a children's and youth room, a doctor's surgery, the manager's office and secretariat, a period bathroom, an old cinema, a sports room, a school classroom and a kindergarten. The exhibition is enriched by an original tribune from which Edward Gierek addressed the factory's workforce in 1978, and by the factory laboratory, where a memorial room of the Kowary carpet workers (dywanówka) is being created.
The museum keeps growing from year to year: in 2019 the manager's room and secretariat were opened, in 2020 the doctor's surgery, and the corridor was decorated with illustrations based on original photographs from the factory. The museum also houses the only exhibition in Poland of military reserve scarves (chusty rezerwy wojskowej).
