About the museum
The Natural History Museum of the Karkonosze National Park, founded in 1962, was first located in Jagniątków and later on ul. Chałubińskiego in Sobieszów. The museum was closed on 1 January 2011. Its educational function was taken over by the Karkonosze National Park Nature and Education Centre in the former palace of the Schaffgotsch family in Sobieszów, which the park received for development in 2013.
The exhibition “Pałac Sobieszów” (“Sobieszów Palace”) occupies eight rooms on the ground floor of the palace, with a total area of about 550 m². It tells the story of the fire at Chojnik Castle, the move of the Schaffgotsch family to Sobieszów, their genealogy, everyday life in the 18th century, forestry and the first efforts to protect the nature of the Karkonosze. The last room is devoted to the Karkonosze National Park as heir to the former count’s estate. The exhibition is available in four languages.
The second exhibition is the multimedia show “Klimatyczne Karkonosze” in the historic Great Stable, spread over two floors covering about 1,600 m². It presents the natural and weather phenomena of the Karkonosze, the plant zones and the life of the forest at night, and in the “Cinema of Weather Phenomena” sunrises and sunsets, a storm and a snowstorm.
