About the museum

The Muzeum Kolejnictwa na Śląsku operates at Jaworzyna Śląska station, at one of the oldest railway junctions in Lower Silesia. It occupies the site of a historic fan-shaped engine shed with 19 stalls, built in 1906–1907. The collection was first gathered in 1992 by the Polish State Railways (PKP) and the Wrocław Railway Enthusiasts’ Club, but after 2002 a lack of funds left the building in ruins.

The museum began operating in 2004, leasing the site and its exhibits from the municipality of Jaworzyna Śląska. Since 2016 it has been a branch of the Foundation for the Protection of Silesia’s Industrial Heritage. Spread over more than 2.5 hectares and 3 km of track, there are more than 150 historic vehicles from the 19th and 20th centuries, including steam, diesel and electric locomotives, wagons and specialist vehicles such as the Warszawa M20 draisines.

The museum calls itself a living museum of technology: at weekends it runs trips on historic rolling stock, operates the Trasa Parowozowa (Steam Locomotive Route), an EN57 vehicle simulator and a historic railway workshop. The interiors of the reconstructed rooms, including the stationmaster’s offices of the engine shed from 1930 and 1970, are visited with a guide.
