About the museum

The Muzeum Kościuszkowskie is located on the grounds of the Kopiec Kościuszki (Kościuszko Mound), the first monument in the world erected in honour of Tadeusz Kościuszko. The mound stands on the Sikornik hill, is 34 metres high and is surrounded by 19th-century Austrian fortifications. The site has the status of a Pomnik Historii (Monument of History) and is looked after by the Kopiec Kościuszki Committee. Since 1 May 1932 the revenue from admission tickets has been used to maintain the mound.

The museum was created as part of a project co-financed from EU funds. It covered the renovation and conversion of Bastion V in Fort No. 2 “Kościuszko”, roofing the inner courtyard with a skylight, the reconstruction of historic gates and footbridges, and the creation of an educational route adapted to the needs of people with disabilities.

The bastion houses the permanent exhibition “Kościuszko – bohater wciąż potrzebny” (Kościuszko – A Hero Still Needed). It has a narrative character, combines original memorabilia with elements of film, theatre and computer games, and leads visitors from Kościuszko's childhood, through the American War of Independence and the fight against Russia in 1792, to the oath taken on the Kraków Market Square on 24 March 1794. The entrance to the museum is at the same time the entrance to the mound.
