About the museum
The AGH Museum has existed since 1969. It was established on the initiative of Prof. Mieczysław Radwan on the 50th anniversary of the university’s inauguration. Initially it operated within the Chair of the History of Technology and Technical Sciences; over time it became an independent unit, and today it is a non-faculty unit of AGH.
The first collection consisted of models of mining and metallurgical equipment: models of ironworks, coking plants and open-hearth furnaces came to the museum in 1969 after an industry exhibition. Among the most valuable souvenirs are the founding documents issued by the Austrian authorities, and mementos from the universities in Leoben, Freiberg and Saint Petersburg, where Poles were educated in the partition era.
The model gallery also shows historic laboratory apparatus from AGH laboratories and machine halls – microscopes, optical equipment, scales and measuring devices; the oldest is an Amsler machine from 1920. Today the museum concentrates mainly on popularising science and, together with student research clubs, runs interactive demonstrations and classes for children and young people.
