About the museum

In 1965 the dean of the AGH Faculty of Geology appointed a commission for the construction of a geological museum. The solemn opening of the prepared exhibition took place on 20 May 1969, on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy (Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza).

The collections were expanded, among other things, through the proceeds of mineral, fossil and jewellery fairs, which made it possible to buy around 1,500 mineralogical and palaeontological specimens and to replace a considerable part of the display cases. Today the museum has about 200 display cases covering roughly 1,100 m², and its collection includes nearly 4,000 specimens.

At the end of 2019 a new permanent exhibition, “Karst Phenomena” (Zjawiska krasowe), was opened. The museum takes part in the Kraków Museum Night and in the Open Doors Days of Kraków Museums.
