About the museum
The Greater Poland Military Museum (Wielkopolskie Muzeum Wojskowe) grew out of collections relating to the Greater Poland Uprising of 1918–1919 and the Greater Poland Troops (Wojska Wielkopolskie); its beginnings date back to 1919. After the war the institution was re-established, and today it is a branch of the National Museum in Poznań. It is located in the central part of the Old Market Square, in one of two pavilions built after the war damage.
From 1973 to 2012 the museum was headed by Tadeusz Jeziorowski, and his work was continued by subsequent directors. In the post-war period several tens of thousands of exhibits were gathered, obtained mainly from former soldiers, their families and collectors.
The permanent exhibition shows edged weapons and firearms, protective armour, military insignia, uniforms and equipment from the period from the 10th to the 21st century. It is adorned with battle paintings, including the largest fragment of the panorama “Battle of the Pyramids” by Wojciech Kossak from 1901. The museum also conducts scientific, publishing and educational activities, and organises temporary exhibitions on the ground floor.
