About the museum
The museum in Bieżuń was founded in 1974 as the Muzeum Regionalne on the initiative of the local teacher, poet and activist Stefan Gołębiowski; the ethnographer and historian Marian Przedpełski also helped shape the idea. In 1986 the institution was renamed Muzeum Historii i Kultury Materialnej Małego Miasta (Museum of the History and Material Culture of a Small Town), and it adopted its present name in 1994. In 1993 it was moved from ul. Zamkowa 2 to its present seat at Stary Rynek 19.
The permanent exhibitions are historical and ethnographic in character. They show the history and culture of the former Płock land and the material culture of a small town in the second half of the nineteenth century. Temporary exhibitions present the work of local artists and folk art. The museum also looks after the legacy of Stefan Gołębiowski, runs a library and publishes “Bieżuńskie Zeszyty Historyczne” (Bieżuń Historical Notebooks).
In January 2009, under an agreement between the mayor of Bieżuń and the marshal of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship, the museum came under the care of the voivodeship self-government and became a branch of the Muzeum Wsi Mazowieckiej in Sierpc, located elsewhere. The institution co-organises the voivodeship poetry competition named after Stefan Gołębiowski.
