About the museum

The museum was established on 21 May 1972 at the Ochotnicza Straż Pożarna (Volunteer Fire Brigade) in Lidzbark, in a newly built firefighters’ house. Its initiator and organiser was the fire brigade commander Maksymilian Anger, and the institution was one of the first fire service museums in Poland. In 2001 its status was changed to the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Muzeum Pożarnictwa w Lidzbarku (Warmian-Masurian Fire Service Museum in Lidzbark), and the premises were thoroughly renovated.

Initially, souvenirs from the history of the Lidzbark fire brigade (founded on 3 May 1889) and other municipal organisations were collected. The collection was enriched by donations from residents and from volunteer fire brigade units across the voivodeship. The collections are displayed in a pavilion of over 100 m², and outside, under a shelter, stand horse-drawn fire carriages, large fire-fighting equipment and a fire engine from 1952.

In the museum you can see documents, decorations, uniforms, banners, a collection of helmets from the 18th century onwards, fire pumps and motor pumps (including one from the Lilpop, Rau i Loewenstein factory), a horse-drawn fire wagon from around 1930 and a leather bucket from 1902. There are also items linked to the history of the town, including a handwritten book of the blacksmiths’ guild from 1725–1845.
