About the museum
The Brodnica Museum was established on 29 March 1973 as the Regional Museum in Brodnica; it has borne its current name since 1999. From the beginning it has been a scholarly and educational institution whose departments cover archaeology, history, ethnography and natural history, with the Brodnica region as its area of activity. The collections number more than 50,000 inventory items, and the museum has organised more than 230 exhibitions, ranging from archaeology to contemporary art.
The museum operates in a complex of three historic buildings in the centre of town. In the cellars of the Teutonic Knights' castle, the former seat of the Brodnica commanders, built from around 1285, the exhibitions “The Brodnica Region in the Middle Ages” and “Sculptures and Architectural Details from the Castle Chapel” are shown. The Chełmno Gate (Brama Chełmińska), built in 1310–1330, houses a gallery, and in the neighbouring townhouse on Mały Rynek are the rooms for temporary exhibitions. The granary, dating from around 1604 and remodelled at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, houses the museum's offices, the exhibition “Everyday Life of the Mesolithic Hunters from Mszano 10,000 Years Ago” and the Centre for Ecological Education.
The exhibition on the Mesolithic hunters from Mszano was honoured in 1997 in a nationwide competition for the most interesting museum event of the year. The museum runs school lessons, scientific camps and an urban game, and cooperates with the Friends of the Brodnica Museum Society.

Due to their historic character, the buildings are only partly accessible to people with mobility impairments. A very uneven, cobbled road leads to the castle courtyard, and the gate for wheelchairs is opened on request by staff. Visiting the castle tower and cellars is difficult because of the stairs. The Chełmno Gate and the granary have stairs, narrow corridors and stairwells; there are no lifts or stair platforms, no accessible toilets and no induction loops. Free parking with a space for people with disabilities is on ul. Zamkowa, and the Chełmno Gate and the granary have parking areas with marked spaces.
