About the museum
The museum began with the Krajoznawcza Wystawa Mazurska (Mazurian Regional Studies Exhibition), organised in 1926 at the State Teachers’ Seminary in Mława. At the end of that year, construction began on a building for the museum at ul. Ogrodowa, today ul. 3 Maja. The Miejskie Muzeum Regionalne (Municipal Regional Museum) opened in December 1929. In 1938 the collections were moved to a school room, and after Mława was occupied in 1939 they were taken to Königsberg, where they were lost. Only a pagan deity, hidden in the crypt of the Church of the Holy Trinity, survived.
The institution was revived in 1963 as the Muzeum Ziemi Zawkrzeńskiej, and from 1965 it operated as a state institution. The first permanent exhibitions opened in 1969. The extension of the building lasted from 1978 to 1980 and gave the museum about a thousand square metres of floor space.
Today the museum has five departments: archaeology, history, art, natural history and education. The archaeological collection numbers several thousand objects from the Middle Stone Age to the Late Middle Ages, and the art department is devoted, among other things, to the paintings of Wojciech Piechowski. The historical exhibition presents the Battle of Mława in September 1939, and the natural history department shows the fauna of northern Masovia.
