About the museum

The Marzipan Museum grew out of an initiative of students of history at the Piotrków branch of the Jan Kochanowski University. In 2014 they organised open-air marzipan workshops, intended to bring old culinary traditions closer. Interest was so great that in 2016 the Piotrków Academic Brotherhood named after Sigismund I the Old (Piotrkowskie Bractwo Akademickie im. Zygmunta I Starego) opened an educational and popularising point in the Old Town under the name ‘Marcepany Króla Zygmunta’ (King Sigismund’s Marzipan).

In 2018 the point was transformed into the Marzipan Museum, and its activity was widened to the popularisation of the history of Piotrków and the Piotrków region. It refers to the Jagiellonian period, when the town was one of the most important centres of the Commonwealth, a place of sejms and of the Crown Tribunal, and when apothecaries worked at the court of King Sigismund I the Old.

The main aim of the museum is to recreate the workshop of Renaissance apothecaries and to show the wealth of Renaissance Piotrków. The museum runs marzipan workshops, lectures in the series ‘Trybunalskie spotkania z historią’ (Tribunal Meetings with History), city games and historical walks, as well as online exhibitions on the history of the town and old cuisine.
