About the museum
The Fire Historical and Educational Centre of the Łódź Land in Wolbórz (Pożarnicze Centrum Historyczno-Edukacyjne Ziemi Łódzkiej) was set up in 2007 in cooperation with the local fire brigade. The foundation stone was laid on 26 June 2005, during the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of fire protection in Wolbórz, and construction work ran from May 2006 to February 2007. The solemn opening took place on 8 July 2007. The investment was supported, among other things, with EU funds for rural development.
The nucleus of the collections consisted of firefighting collections assembled by local activists of the volunteer fire brigade. They were supplemented by the regional collections of the Friends of Wolbórz Society (Stowarzyszenie Przyjaciół Wolborza), founded in 1963. Wolbórz is regarded as the place where the roots of Polish firefighting should be sought, because Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski, considered the forerunner of Polish firefighting, came from here.
The main part of the exhibition is a hall with firefighting equipment: original horse-drawn fire carts, historic hand pumps and motor pumps, ladders, combat and dress uniforms (including foreign ones), helmets, and a fully working fire engine based on a Star 25 from the 1960s. In the centre are also banners, medals, decorations and fire-service documents, as well as a regional room. The centre runs museum lessons and demonstrations of historic hand pumps.
