About the museum

The Muzeum w Piotrkowie Trybunalskim has its roots in the Piotrków branch of the Polish Society for Regional Studies (Polskie Towarzystwo Krajoznawcze), founded in 1908. The core of the collections was a collection of fossils donated in 1909, and the first exhibition of the Muzeum Krajoznawcze Ziemi Piotrkowskiej (Regional Studies Museum of the Piotrków Land) opened on 14 January 1910. Until 1918 the collections were shown in rented flats, and during the First World War in the refectory of the Bernardine monastery.

The museum’s seat is a castle, in fact a tower palace built in 1512–1519 for Sigismund the Old as a royal residence for the period of the Sejms. The building stands on an artificial mound, formerly surrounded by a moat. In 1578 Stefan Batory established the Crown Tribunal in Piotrków, which operated here for more than two hundred years. After damage and conversion into an Orthodox church, the castle was handed over to a regional studies society, and after renovation the museum reopened in it on 15 October 1922. In 1949 the state took over the collections.

The current permanent exhibition “Rola Piotrkowa Trybunalskiego w dziejach państwa polskiego” (“The Role of Piotrków Trybunalski in the History of the Polish State”) has been on view since December 2017. It presents the settlement of the town, the medieval development of the centre, the period of the Sejms under the Jagiellons, and the history of the Crown Tribunal. Among the exhibits are archaeological artefacts, portraits of the Tribunal’s deputies and documents. The museum also has departments of archaeology, ethnography and history, and a branch in Polichno.
