About the museum
The idea of founding a museum in Racibórz arose at the beginning of the 20th century on the initiative of teachers at the local grammar school. The chosen seat was a 14th-century former church building of the Dominican sisters’ community, which had stood empty since 1911. The church was renovated and adapted to the needs of the museum, which officially opened on 4 December 1927.
The collections grew quickly, so in 1936–1938 a renovation was carried out, during which two 17th-century frescoes were discovered. From 1938 the museum occupied the entire area of the former Church of the Holy Spirit. After the Second World War a large part of the collections had been destroyed or lost, and the museum was rebuilt from scratch. In time another building at 12 ul. Chopina was adapted, and in 1964 a facility with administration, storerooms and a library was set up at 15 ul. Rzeźnicza. Since 1990 the museum has been a unit of the Racibórz municipality.
Today the permanent and temporary exhibitions are shown in the former church at 1 ul. Gimnazjalna and in the building at 12 ul. Chopina. The museum has departments of archaeology, history, ethnography, and art and artistic crafts, and presents nine permanent exhibitions, including “W domu Ozyrysa” (“In the House of Osiris”, artefacts of ancient Egypt), “Sztuka dawna” (“Art of the Past”), with sculptures and paintings from the 15th to 18th centuries, and “Ginące zawody” (“Vanishing Trades”).
