About the museum
The Plenerowe Muzeum Czarnego Dębu (Open-Air Museum of the Black Oak) is located in the village of Roszków in the Krzyżanowice commune, near the Buków flood-control reservoir (Polder Buków) on the Oder. The exhibit is the trunk of a pedunculate oak which, according to scientific research, sprouted around the 11th century and, after about 350 years, was felled by a flood. For centuries it lay under water and in the ground, which is why the wood darkened and became known as black oak.
The trunk was uncovered about 600 years after the flood. Only the hard heartwood has survived to this day, as the outer sapwood has completely decayed. The exhibition includes two large trunks and a display case with a cross-section of the wood, showing its internal structure.
Next to the exhibition stands an information board explaining what black oak is, and a picnic shelter with a plaque commemorating Anna Otlik, a long-time resident of Roszków known for her hospitality.
