About the museum
The Open-Air Museum of the Black Oak was established in Roszków, near the artificial flood-control reservoir on the Oder – the Buków Polder. A polder is a flood area that fills with water during high water and protects neighbouring land. In such areas trees, especially oaks, willows and elms, are often flooded and yet keep growing, and only during great floods are they felled.
Black oak is not a separate species but the name for the trunk of a pedunculate oak which stayed under water or in the ground for a long time and therefore turned dark. According to research, the trunk shown here probably sprouted in the 11th century; after about 350 years it was felled by a flood and lay under water and earth for hundreds of years. After several centuries the trunk was recovered and displayed by the embankments of the polder.
According to the commune’s description, two large oak trunks can be seen at the exhibition, as well as a display case with a cross-section of the wood showing its internal structure. An information board next to the trunk explains the origin of the black oak, and beside it stands a picnic shelter called “U Tanty Anny” (“At Aunt Anna’s”). A similar board has also been placed in the centre of Krzyżanowice.
