About the museum

The Saturn Museum in Czeladź was established by a resolution of the city council in October 2008 and opened on 1 March 2009. Its predecessor was the Czeladzka Izba Tradycji (Czeladź Tradition Room), which had operated since 2003 at the city library, and whose collections on local mining formed the basis of the museum’s collection. The name comes from the Saturn hard coal mine, which was operated industrially from 1887 and closed in the 1990s.

The museum occupies the historic buildings of the former mine, including the Pałac pod Filarami, the former residence of the mine director, and the Cechownia (guild house) of 1911, designed by Józef Pius Dziekoński in the Art Nouveau style. After renovation by the city in 2020–2023, the Cechownia became the museum’s main seat. Since 2016 the former power station has housed the Gallery of Contemporary Art “Elektrownia”, where the machine park has been preserved.

In December 2025 the permanent exhibition “Górnicza tożsamość Zagłębia” (The Mining Identity of the Zagłębie) opened in the Cechownia. The museum also looks after collections on the history of Czeladź, publishes books and runs educational programmes.
