Muzeum Organów Śląskich

A free museum in the basement of the Academy of Music in Katowice, preserving historic organs and their parts from Upper Silesia.

Opening hoursFree admission

About the museum

The idea of establishing an organ museum arose more than thirty years before it was founded. Prof. Julian Gembalski, associated with the Chair of Organs and Church Music of the Academy of Music, collected organ components during research in Upper Silesia: pipes, wind chests, fragments of keydesks, and entire damaged instruments. These objects were inventoried, secured and conserved.

Some of the collection was shown in exhibitions accompanying the scholarly conferences “Organy na Śląsku” (Organs in Silesia) in 1983 and 1994. The Senate of the Academy established the museum as part of the university’s structure on 4 April 2002; organisationally it belongs to the Chair of Organs and Church Music.

The institution occupies five large rooms in the basement of the Academy’s main building. The exhibition shows only part of the collections; the rest is kept in storerooms. The collections also serve research into the construction, former technology and conservation of Silesian organs; a conservation workshop and the Organological Archive operate at the Chair.
