About the museum
The Muzeum Minerałów “Skarby Ziemi” (Skarby Ziemi Mineral Museum) is a private institution in the centre of Bielsko-Biała, a few dozen metres from the 11 Listopada Street pedestrian zone. It operates alongside a shop selling minerals, fossils and stone jewellery, which also runs a shop at the Silver Mine (Kopalnia Srebra) in Tarnowskie Góry.
The collection includes more than 550 mineral types from around the world, about 800 specimens in total. The organisers consider it probably the largest private mineral exhibition in Poland in terms of the number of types. Each specimen has a label with its name, chemical formula and place of origin. Some of the exhibits are also shown at the Institute of Chemistry of the University of Silesia in Katowice and at the Silver Mine in Tarnowskie Góry.
The visit begins with a 25-minute film about collecting and processing minerals and rocks, shot during the museum’s expeditions to the Sudetes in 2016. Afterwards visitors look at the larger specimens in the main hall and rarer minerals in the microscope room.
