About the museum
The Muzeum Mitologii Słowiańskiej (Museum of Slavic Mythology) opened on 24 June 2017 on the grounds of Grodzisko Owidz. It was created in cooperation between the Gminny Ośrodek Kultury i Sportu Grodzisko Owidz and the Stowarzyszenie Ekologiczno-Kulturalne “Wspólna Ziemia” (Ecological and Cultural Association “Wspólna Ziemia”). According to its own announcements, it is the first institution in Europe devoted to the religion and mythology of the Slavs.
The museum’s mission is to popularise knowledge of the beliefs and spiritual culture of the ancient Slavs through exhibitions, artistic events, publications and museum lessons. The exhibition presents ideas about the origin and structure of the universe, a reconstructed myth about Marzanna and Jaryło, a fragment of a temple, and a statue of Svantevit from Arkona, reconstructed on the basis of notes by the chronicler Saxo Grammaticus. It also shows the pre-Christian roots of selected traditions and festivals that have survived in today’s culture. Part of the exhibition is viewed with 3D glasses.
The museum is located next to the reconstructed stronghold, so a visit can be combined with a tour of Grodzisko Owidz. The institution also organises meetings, lectures and workshops on Slavic rites and plant-based festivals.
