About the museum

Collections on the history and culture of Kociewie began to be gathered in the 1960s in the Gdańska Tower (Baszta Gdańska). In 1973 the Station for the Dissemination of Knowledge about the Region (Stacja Upowszechniania Wiedzy o Regionie) was set up, which cooperated with the Society of Friends of the Kociewie Land (Towarzystwo Miłośników Ziemi Kociewskiej). Thanks to this cooperation the Museum of the Kociewie Land (Muzeum Ziemi Kociewskiej) was established in 1980, and its first director was Andrzej Błażyński.

The museum occupies the preserved fragments of the medieval town walls: the Corner Tower (Baszta Narożna, also called the Ducal Tower, Książęca) and the Gdańska Tower (also called the Shoemakers' Tower, Szewska). In 2001 a new museum building funded by the town was opened next to the Corner Tower. Today the permanent exhibitions are shown in the Corner Tower and in the administrative building at ul. Boczna 2, and temporary exhibitions also in the town hall.

The institution documents the archaeology, history and ethnography of three districts: Starogard, Świecie and Tczew. The collections include relics of the Lusatian and Pomeranian cultures, memorabilia of the marksmen's guild (bractwo kurkowe) and of the 2nd Uhlan Regiment, and objects connected with the folk culture of Kociewie. The museum runs museum lessons, city tours and demonstrations of traditional crafts; it also has a library of almost 3000 volumes and publishes the yearbook “Rydwan”.
