About the museum
The Museum in Skarszewy, operating as the Skarszewskie Centrum Ekspozycji Historycznych (Skarszewy Historical Exhibition Centre), was established in 2006 and is run by the Gminny Ośrodek Kultury i Biblioteka Publiczna w Skarszewach (Municipal Culture Centre and Public Library in Skarszewy). Its collections were assembled from donations by local collectors, including Maciej Mostowy and Edward Zimmermann, and from materials made available by the Państwowe Muzeum Archeologiczne w Gdańsku (State Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk).
The exhibition presents the history of the town from the Stone Age to the years of the Second World War; many exhibits come from excavations carried out in Skarszewy. Among the items on show are coins, memorabilia of the Bractwo Kurkowe (Fowler’s Guild), and old newspapers, including copies of the underground paper “Głos Serca Polskiego”, published by the organisation Gryf Pomorski. Curiosities include an old labelled beer bottle and a packet of tobacco from 1854, which are recorded in Polish record books.
The centre is now located on the third floor of the Centrum Usług Społecznych (Social Services Centre) at ul. Szkolna 9, and visits require prior arrangement.
