About the museum
The National Museum in Gdańsk is the largest cultural institution in Pomerania. It opened in 1948 as the State Museum, which was renamed the Pomeranian Museum that same summer; it has borne its present name since 1972. Its predecessor was the Municipal Museum, and a considerable part of the collections was gathered after the war from the destroyed city.
The Department of Old Art, the main museum building, is located at ul. Toruńska 1 in the historic former Franciscan monastery, next to the Church of the Holy Trinity in Stare Przedmieście. It is the oldest branch of the museum. It holds European old art from the 12th to the early 20th century, mainly Dutch, Flemish and German, with a particular focus on Gdańsk.
The branch currently has four permanent galleries of ceramics, goldsmith’s work and pewter, and the exhibition “Pobożni i cnotliwi. Dawni Gdańszczanie w zwierciadle sztuki” (Pious and Virtuous: Former Gdańsk Residents in the Mirror of Art). The museum also runs branches in the Oliwa Abbots’ Palace, the Oliwa Granary, the Green Gate, NOMUS, the Gdańsk Gallery of Photography, and outside the city in Będomin and Waplewo Wielkie.
