About the museum

The Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk was founded in 1953 as a department of the Pomeranian Museum, and since 1 January 1962 it has operated as an independent institution. Its seat is the Dom Przyrodników (House of Naturalists) at ul. Mariacka 25/26, which is currently closed for renovation.

Visitors are received at the Błękitny Baranek Granary (Spichlerz Błękitny Baranek) at ul. Chmielna 53 on Granary Island in Gdańsk. In the restored granary an exhibition on life in medieval Gdańsk was opened in 2008; today it houses, among others, the exhibitions “Miasto pod miastem” (A City Beneath the City), “Średniowieczna uliczka hanzeatycka” (A Medieval Hanseatic Lane), “Gdańsk w świecie Hanzy” (Gdańsk in the World of the Hanse) and “Wyspa Spichrzów w Gdańsku” (Granary Island in Gdańsk).

The museum also runs other branches: the Romanesque Cellar (Piwnica Romańska) on Plac Dominikański, the Grodzisko in Sopot and a branch in Gniew. Its collections, numbering about 30,000 objects, include archaeological material from northern Poland and Sudan, objects from Gdańsk and Pomerania, and a collection of amber.
