About the museum
The Edward Herbst villa stands at Księży Młyn, next to the former Scheibler factory. The neo-Renaissance building was erected in 1875–1877 for Matylda, the eldest daughter of Karol Scheibler, and her husband Edward Herbst. The family lived here until the end of 1941; later the complex was used by various institutions and fell into ruin.
The Museum of Art in Łódź took over the residence in 1976. A fourteen-year renovation combined with the reconstruction of the interiors ended in 1990 with the opening of the palace to visitors as a branch of the museum; the institution received the Europa Nostra medal at that time. In 2012 the Gallery of Old Art with a permanent exhibition was set up in the former carriage house, and a year later the museum became the first in Poland to allow people with visual impairments to visit independently, winning the Sybilla award. In 2015 the complex received the title of Monument of History (Pomnik Historii).
Visitors see the reconstructed interiors of the manufacturer’s villa, the Gallery of Old Art, the exhibition “Herbstowie. Historie niedokończone” (The Herbsts: Unfinished Stories) about two generations of the family, and the garden with a gazebo. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions and workshops.
