About the museum
The Museum of the Artist’s Book was established in 1993 by the Correspondance des Arts foundation, founded in 1990 by Janusz Tryzna as an extension of the publishing house of the same name, which had been operating since 1980. The museum is housed in the villa of Henryk Grohman at ul. Tymienieckiego 24, in the former textile factory complex of Scheibler and Grohman at Księży Młyn in Łódź. Since 1 January 2023 the museum has been a cultural institution established by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and the foundation.
The museum’s mission is to disseminate knowledge of the art of the book, both classical and artistic, and of printing, bookbinding and graphic techniques from Gutenberg’s time to the present. The collections include works of visual art related to the art of the book, objects in the form of artists’ books, historic machines and devices for typography, papermaking and bookbinding, a library with rare and bibliophile prints, as well as manuscripts, posters, playbills and photographic materials.
The century-old villa was formerly a venue for concerts and meetings with prominent figures of culture, and Henryk Grohman collected graphic art, musical instruments and sheet music there. The museum protects the building from degradation, but its legal status has not been settled, which delays a general renovation. Permanent exhibitions are shown during a visit with a guide.
