About the museum
The museum is located on the grounds of the former estate of the von Lieres und Wilkau family in Galowice near Żórawina, in a historic half-timbered granary from 1730. It is the last such large, entirely wooden farm building preserved in Lower Silesia; across four storeys with a total area of 1,400 m², thousands of tonnes of grain were once stored. The granary, like the carriages, was saved from destruction by the founder of the Fundacja Gallen, Dr Tadeusz Kołacz.
The nucleus of the collection was a milord (a type of light carriage) from the Vienna imperial workshop of Schustala, bought in 1977. Today the collection numbers almost sixty sleighs, coaches and gigs. The exhibition is arranged over three floors: the ground floor shows town and representative vehicles and a Swiss collection; the first floor, rural and peasant vehicles; and the second floor everything about the horse, horsemanship and equestrian pastimes.
The museum also holds cavalry saddles, harnesses, trunks and suitcases, a field kitchen from 1905, and a section devoted to the Silesian village and the history of Galowice. A herb garden has been laid out next to the buildings, and the foundation runs museum lessons, workshops and events.
