About the museum
The beginnings of museum activity in Myślenice date back to 1929, when four activists founded the Muzeum Regionalne Ziemi Myślenickiej (Regional Museum of the Myślenice Land), associated with the branch of the Polish Society of Regional Studies (Polskie Towarzystwo Krajoznawcze). The collections were scattered during the German occupation, and the museum was reactivated after the war; it opened in 1953 in the Parish House at ul. 3 Maja. In 1975 the State Museum in Myślenice was established, and from 1979 its exhibitions were housed in the historic Dom Grecki (Greek House) at ul. Sobieskiego 3, where 19th-century burgher interiors and an ethnographic exhibition were set up.
The Dom Grecki has been privately owned since 2003, which is why the municipality decided to build a new seat. Since 21 January 2017 the institution has been called the Muzeum Niepodległości w Myślenicach (Museum of Independence in Myślenice), and on 10 November 2018, on the hundredth anniversary of regaining independence, a new building at ul. Traugutta 11 was opened with a historical and ethnographic exhibition.
The museum tells the story of independent Poland through the experiences of Myślenice residents, combining the function of a regional museum with a rich ethnographic collection and a modern centre of culture and education. It runs museum lessons, lectures, temporary exhibitions and virtual walks around the town.
